The lead active ingredient in Valura™ is Cacao, a plant that proponents say puts the sex drive into overdrive! The Mayan
civilization worshipped the Cacao Tree for they believed it was divine in origin. Its Latin name, Theobrom Cacao, means "food
of the gods", and "cacao is a Mayan word meaning 'God Food.' Cacao has been used by traditional societies as a mood elevator
(aphrodisiac) and a peripheral vasodilator. Cacao is loaded with flavonoids and phenolics, natural compounds with important
health benefits, possibly including, but not limited, to helping to reduce platelet activity in the blood, which then could
reduce risk of blood clots, and ultimately, lead to a reduced risk of heart disease. Cacao also contains catechin, a natural
chemical with antioxidant properties that protects cellular health and helps prevent oxidative damage to the heart, kidney,
lungs and spleen. Additionally, the high magnesium levels in cacao can contribute to bone health.
Asian Ginseng, whose active agents are ginsenosides (triterpene saponins), has been a part of Chinese medicine for over
2,000 years, and is another active agent in this proprietary formula. Ginseng is very popular throughout most of Asia as a
remedy for erectile dysfunction. A double-blind trial in Korea found that 1,800 mg per day of Asian ginseng extract for three
months helped improve libido and the ability to maintain an erection in men with erectile dysfunction. Another double-blind
trial also found it helpful for relief of fatigue and, possibly, stress.
The extracts of Asian ginseng has been shown to affect the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and the immune system, which
could account for many of the documented effects which indicate that Asian ginseng enhances phagocytosis, natural killer cell
activity, and the production of interferon; improves physical and mental performance in mice and rats; causes vasodilation;
increases resistance to exogenous stress factors; and affects hypoglycemic activity.
European Peony, another ingredient in Valura™'s unique formulation, contains a glycoside called paeoniflorin. Proanthocyanidins,
flavonoids, tannins, polysaccharides, and paeoniflorin are all considered to contribute to the medicinal activity of various forms
of peony. Paeoniflorin's major effect seems to be to calm nerves and alleviate spasm. Peony has been shown to reduce sexual dysfunction
in men, reportedly caused by neuroleptic-induced hyperprolactinemia.3,4
Chinese Hawthorn is a peripheral vasodilator and dilates blood vessels away from the heart. This phytochemical, with exceptional
preventive capacities, comes from the hawthorn tree. Hawthorn is rich in bioflavonoids, which relax and dilate the arteries. These
compounds are powerful antioxidants that help increase the flow of blood and oxygen to the heart. This reduces the work required by
the heart to circulate blood, and in- turn this reduces blood pressure and stress to the heart muscle.5
Parsley is a rich source of calcium, iron, riboflavin, potassium, thiamine, vitamin A, vitamin C and trace amounts of niacin.
Parsley is used as a vasodilator, to help reduce hypertension, and to assist urinary dysfunction as a result of an enlarged prostate.6
Quercetin acts on the smooth muscles and blood vessels to increase blood flow. Quercetin has a twofold physiological impact on
the erectile process. First, it acts as a vasodilator.7 Quercetin is a bioflavonoid found in red wine, green tea, and a variety of
fruits and vegetables. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities can protect cellular structures and blood vessels from free
radical damage. A good vasodilator, quercetin relaxes the vasculature and could lower blood pressure.
Because of its adaptogenic properties, Schisandra has been applied next to some herbal medicines like Ginseng as a stimulator for
the central nervous system, increased brain efficiency, improved reflexes, and an accelerated rate of endurance. Schisandra is known
for its ability to increase levels of nitric oxide, which is an important component of erection physiology. In a cascade of events
that starts with erotic thoughts and/or physical sensations nitric oxide is release from nerve endings in the penis. Nitric oxide
acts as a relaxant that allows blood vessels to dilate, supplying increased blood flow and swelling of the tissues. This increase
in the flow of blood also creates an increased tension on the blood vessel wall, which activates the release of more nitric oxide.
The increased release of nitric oxide further allows the blood within the penis to dilate, increasing both the length and girth of
the penis.
Gingko Biloba is referred to as the "smart herb", because it improves brain function by improving circulation and increasing blood
flow and oxygen supply to the brain. Its effects in improving circulation may also contribute to its use for impotency and peripheral
vascular insufficiency. The terpene lactones found in GBE, known as ginkgolides and bilobalide, typically make up approximately 6% of
the extract, and are associated with increasing circulation to the brain and other parts of the body and may exert a protective action
on nerve cells.8 GBE regulates the tone and elasticity of blood vessels,9 making circulation more efficient.10 A standardized extract
is good source of the phytochemicals that act as powerful antioxidants and inhibit blood platelet clumping.
Scientists have isolated a number of active ingredients contained in Astragalus, including bioflavonoids, choline, and a polysaccharide
called 'Astragalan B'. Sexual arousal occurs not just in the genitals, but in the whole body and especially in the brain. For men, it
actually begins when the brain sends impulses down the spinal cord and out to the nerves that serve the penis. These impulses trigger
the production of nitric oxide. Astragalus has been valued by the Chinese for centuries for its immune-enhancing and adaptogenic properties.
As an adaptogen, it may modify and improve the body's response to stress through action on the adrenal cortex.11,12
Niacin (vitamin B3) produces a flushing sensation all over your body by inducing histamine release, one effect of which is to dialate
blood vessels. This is essentially the same effect as the sex flush documented by Masters and Johnson, although probably more intense.
Niacin can also serve as a dopaminergic agonist for enhanced motor mechanism activity.
